OVERVIEW OF KS4

The aims are to enable students to:
• an understanding of location on a local, regional and global scale
• an awareness of the characteristics, distribution and processes affecting contrasting physical and human
environments
• an understanding of the ways in which people interact with each other and with their environment
• an awareness of the contrasting opportunities and constraints presented by different environments
• an appreciation of and concern for the environment
• an appreciation of the earth including its people, places, landscapes, natural processes and phenomena.

TERM 1 2021/2022 TOPICS OVERVIEW

  • Natural Environment- Weather, and Climate and natural vegetation.

In this section of the syllabus, we shall describe how weather data are collected, make calculations using information from weather instruments Use and interpret graphs and other diagrams showing weather and climate data. Furthermore, describe and explain the characteristics of two climates: equatorial and hot desert; and describe and explain the characteristics of tropical rainforest and hot desert ecosystems and describe the causes and effects of deforestation of tropical rainforest.

 

  • Economic development

In this theme, we shall learn about the indicators of development; Demonstrate an understanding of an industrial system: inputs, processes and outputs; Describe and explain the main features of an agricultural system: inputs, processes and outputs; Describe and explain the growth of tourism in relation to the main attractions of the physical and human landscape; Describe the importance of non-renewable fossil fuels, renewable energy supplies, nuclear power and fuelwood; globally and in different countries at different levels of development; Describe methods of water supply and the proportions of water used for agriculture, domestic and industrial purposes in countries at different levels of economic development; and Describe how economic activities may pose threats to the natural environment and people, locally and globally.
