Long-term plan

This long-term plan shows the units in this scheme of work and a suggestion of how long to spend teaching each one. The suggested teaching time is based on 150 hours of teaching for English Stage 3.

SHORT TERM

Different stories by the same writer

 

  1. Different stories by the same writer

-Explore the writing styles of different writers, reading more than one story by the same writer.

-use information from the book cover, including blurbs and reviews

– find out more about the story, and write their own reviews

-learn about themes in stories by considering what the characters learn or do, and what changes over the duration of a story

– plan and write a new chapter for a story

– paying particular attention to different ways of beginning sentences

– Work in a group to create a poster offering advice about when, how, and why to vary sentence beginnings.

 

2, Formal and informal letters

-learners will identify the features and layout of letters

– write letters for a specific purpose, using a range of sentence types.

– compare letters and recount texts, identifying similarities and differences in structure, style, and purpose, including considering the use of paragraphs or sections.

– present a personal recount to an audience.

 

  1. Poems from different cultures

-learners will read and discuss poems from other cultures,

– identify unfamiliar words and using context to work out the meaning.

– They will select a poem to perform,

– evaluate their own and each other’s performances.

– identify poems around a chosen theme and create their own poems to create an anthology

– They will write and edit a review of their own and others’ work.

  • access to a wide range of fiction, non-fiction and poetry texts that learners can read independently for pleasure.
