TERM 1 2022-2023

Unit 5.1 Stories from different cultures

In this unit, learners will learn about stories from different cultures and think about how stories have been passed down through time. Learners will gain practice in examining texts to find particular information to answer questions. Learners will incorporate a different viewpoint into their own writing and will use a fiction text as a model for writing, before writing original texts based on stories they have read. Learners will continue to learn how to structure their own writing. Learners will learn how to punctuate complex sentences and use pronouns appropriately, incorporating these into their own writing.

Unit 5.2 Recounts

In this unit, learners will explore non-fiction texts that recount events. Learners will look at formality and informality in texts, including exploring the conventions of standard English by comparing it with non-standard English. Learners will learn about the use of apostrophes and how to locate information alphabetically during the unit. Learners will look at how communication differs depending on the audience it is aimed at, and work at writing and presenting information with a specific audience in mind. Learners will be encouraged to use a variety of sentence typesparticular writing multi-clause sentences. Learners will work on recognising and using comparatives and superlatives appropriately in their writing. Learners will examine newspaper reports to find examples of facts and opinions in the writing of events, and write and present their own news report, both to their peers and to younger audiences

Unit 5.3 Narrative poetry

In this unit, learners will take a close look at narrative poetry and how language and structure are specifically chosen to convey particular moods. Learners will give their own opinions of narrative poems they have read and will practise examining texts to find specific information, referring to the text if asked to explain where this information comes from. Learners will write their own narrative poem using the poetic devices they gather from reading, examining and discussing narrative poems. They will look at performing their poems for different audiences and be asked to consider how they could modify their performance to suit the needs of the audience

 

TERM 11 2022-2023

Unit 5.4 Explain it to me

In this unit, learners will investigate the structure and language features of explanatory information texts. They will look at how well these features work in other’s writing and learn to express their opinions. Learners will incorporate appropriate features into their own writing, using explanation texts as models. They will continue to develop their listening and discussion skills throughout the unit. Learners’ knowledge of different types of nouns and quantifiers will be looked at. Learners will investigate sentence types, and use a variety of connectives and multi-clause sentences to improve the structure of their writing. They intensity in their vocabulary. The use of figurative language will be examined and discussed during the unit, as well as other features that are commonly found in poetry. Learners will be encouraged to incorporate all these features in a poem that they will write themselves

Unit 5.6 Classic literature

In this unit, learners will look at classic children’s literature that is considered noteworthy and of importance. They will be encouraged to extend the time they spend reading and to think about their reading habits. Learners will explore how to spell words with unpronounced vowel phonemes and how to correctly will prepare presentations for the rest of the class based on their own writing, explaining how or why something happens

Unit 5.5 Poems by significant poets

In this unit, learners will read and discuss classic poems and poems by significant poets. Learners will share their ideas about the type of poetry they like, including what language and poetic features appeal to them. Learners will explore how characters in poems are depicted, and decide whether dramatised video representations of poetry have an influence on their appeal to their audience. Learners will explore and play with homonyms with the intention of writing poems containing them. They will also look at comparatives and superlatives apostrophes. Learners will also work out rules for difficult spellings. Texts will be studied with the aim of discovering information about the characters and how they interact with each other and with the settings of the stories, using both clearly stated facts and clues given in the text. Learners will consider idioms, explore their meanings and then use them in their own writing. Before writing their own short stories, learners will see how they can create a different effect in their writing by altering the sequence.

TERM 3 2022-2023

Unit 5.7 A play script, book and film of the same story

In this unit, learners will read playscripts and compare them with books and film adaptations of the same story. Learners will study playscripts to determine their structure, and they will explore how characters and settings are developed by the writer, and practice this themselves. Learners will note vocabulary that may be good to use in their own writing. Learners will look at how dramatic effect is achieved in both plays and films by reading a playscript and comparing it with the film version of the same story. The similarities and differences between playscripts and scriptwriting for stories and discussing what effect this type of material has on the reader. Learners will convey their views about story characters by writing and exchanging messages with other learners. They will look at the differences in how both written and spoken speech is expressed. Learners will write new material for a familiar story, using the language techniques and punctuation studied in the unit. In addition, learners will look at how the same letter strings can be pronounced differently.

Unit 5.9 Persuasive texts

In this unit, learners will look at persuasive texts, comparing their features with those of other non-fiction text types that they have read. Unit 5.8 Stories developed into films

In this unit, learners will compare books with films, discussing and comparing how characters are shown and described in both. Learners will make choices about the most appropriate ways of presenting information to an audience. They will gain practice at getting information from texts quickly by skimming and scanning. Characters in stories will be looked at in detail so that learners can write from a character’s viewpoint and have a clear picture of their motives and role in the story. This will include looking for implicit meaning in and discussing persuasive texts in detail, learners will decide what makes a successful persuasive text and write their own. Modal verbs and prefixes and suffixes will be looked at to give learners ideas about how vocabulary can be used in their own persuasive texts. Learners will write a short text that tries to sell something, a persuasive leaflet aimed at a particular audience, and letters representing different viewpoints about an issue.
